I fear there's a large flock of the Library's readers who are gonna go after Troy to tickle him with hot branding irons because of the minute font he used for "Space Cattle". Me, I don't mind. I've got decent reading-glasses. Going through the "Prologue" of this here story, I spotted a few intriguing spelling errors, which had me go have a look at the good Doctor's e-mail address: and lo and behold, it says ".de" at the end, which means that, one, our Dokter probably won't be watching the World Cup Football Finals this sunday, and two, English ist nicht seine/ihre muttersprache. Okay. That's cool. Never cared too much about mild errors anyway. To be honest, I feel that Dr Troy's English is better than that of most, well, English/American people. On top of that --and despite I rated Herr/Frau Dokter's earlier story at six-- Troy can write. It's just the content of the story which seemed a tad far-fetched in "Adrielle's Sacrifice". "Space Cattle" sets off rather well. With an explanation of the world --or Universe-- as it is in 3269. Sadly, the story suffers largely under Dr Troy's urges to depict lecherous and depraved behavior from his creations. Which could be okay, but it isn't when those creations don't do anything else but show this kind of behaviour. They're like little robots, little Duracell Rabbits; doing little else but hammer their little drums. Not something regular rabbits are known for. Here, the characters show practically all aspects of the darker parts of Dr Troy's mind, but the human traits are absent in all their splendour. It's not that Dr Troy hasn't got any imagination; on the contrary, I fear he/she has too much. I feel, should Troy tone down a bit on the dripping sex scenes, "Space Cattle" would be a far more enjoyable story. Writing is above par, but the story veers too much towards erotic-slap-stick. Maybe Dr Troy should watch a few Rainer Werner Fassbinder movies ("Chinesische Roulette" springs to mind) to see what Dark Erotiscism could be about. When set in a Science Fiction environment, Fassbinder would look like some of H.R. Giger's paintings. "Space Cattle" should also 'look' like a Giger painting. Now, it has the feel of a running out of hand hardcore Marx Brothers movie, where some creatures from a preliminary "Alien" draft accidentally wandered on set... JJ (7/10)
