It's the little things. Little things like "Someday she would ask him to explain the benefit of aged scotch as opposed to brand new scotch".
Things like those are what make the difference between writng and writing.
It takes skill, but above all knowledge, to do that. Knowledge of people. Knowledge of one's self.
In any case, Donya has a way with words. And with 'little things'. She's an ace in portraying characters through musings and inner imaginings, adding little gestures, small irks and quirks, to build a persona which is so rich in texture that you can 't do else but sympa- and empathise with them.
It's also this excellent characterization which makes Donya's stories what they are. Not stories, really, but recollections of things that might happen, as seen by Dee, or 'the girl'. Donya's female characters don't need a name, really. because we know who and what 'she' is, thanks to the reflections of 'her' inner self.
Like I said: knowledge. But that knowledge alone is not enough. It takes skill to put that knowledge to work on a piece of paper, or a computer program.
Donya has both the knowledge and the skill. Which results in little exemplary stories like this one.
